moooooooooooooooleee :)

what is a mole?

THE CHEMICAL MOLE

a unit of measurement containing 6.02 X 12^23

a mole of atoms is

602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

this week in chemisty we also watched a really cool video that mr.olsen made with mr.washington. it was really creative and taught me a lot about moles.

THE FIRST TEN ALKANES

today we leared the first 10 alkanes.

they are:

CH4------METHANE
C2H6-----ETHANE
C3H8-----PROPANE
C4H10----BUTANE
C5H12----PENTANE
C6H14----HEXANE
C7H16----HEPTANE
C8H18----OCTANE
C9H20-----NONANE
C10H22-----DECANE

the formula for an alkane is ----- CnH2n+2

molecular geometry

today we did a lab on the chemical formulas of elements.

we created 2d structures, 3d structures, named the geometry and their bond angles. we created 3 types of AB2, 2 types of AB3 and a single type of AB4.

we also learned that:
any electron orbital can hold 2 electrons.
a sharedelectron pair is called a covalent bond (nm + nm).
and unshared electon pair s called a lone pair.
vsepr stands for valance shell electron pair repulsion.

attractive molecules :)

In this lesson we observed the response of certain liquids to a charged wand and the behavior of the same liquids as droplets. This activity gave me information about possible interactioon between molecules.

in our groups of four we tested four liquids. the four molecules are water, acetic acid, isopropanol, and kerosene. the three liquids that were attraced to the rod were water acetic acid and isoprotanol. the singalliquid that wasn't attracted was kerosene.

we also did a droplet test. we placed a single droplet of each of the four liquids on a piece of waxed paper. the isoproaol droplet was flat and so was the kerosene droplet. the water and acetic acid sat high on the paper.

BALANCING CHEMICAL FORMULAS

today in chem. our class worked in partners and created chemical formulas.each square had represents an ion with a postive charge or a negitive charge.

in total we created 9 different ionic compounds containing one type of cation and one type of anion. each compund was placed together so that the charges canceled and the compound was neutral. Next to each compound we created we wrote the name. first we wrote the cation and then the anion.

to created these 9 compounds we used only 4 molecules. those molecuses included Al for aluminum. Ca for calcium. N for nitride. and finaly Cl for chloride.

TYPE ONE BINARY IONIC COMPUNDS

DID YOU KNOW THAT WHEN NONMETAL ELEMENTS BECOME ANIONS, THEIR NAME IS CHANGED TO END IN -IDE?

WELL IT'S TRUE.

AN IONIC COMPOUND IS MADE OUT OF CATIONS AND ANIONS, AND THEIR CHARGE ADD UP TO ZERO.

EXAMPLES

HYDROGEN OXIDE H2O
CALCIUM CHLORIDE CACL2
BARIUM IODIDE BAI2

GOOGLE DOCS EDITING

TODAY WE EDITED A CLASSMATES GOOGLE DOC.

MY CLASSMATE WAS KAYLYN DAWKINGS.

IT WAS A GROUP ACTIVITY THAT ALLOWED US TO SHARE OR FILES WITH OUR PEEEERS.

AFTER THAT WE PLAYED A GAME CALLED THE VISIBLE LIGHT ENERGY COLUMN GAME.

THIS HELPED US REVIEW LIGHT.

THANK YOU
MCFLURRRY

SPECTRUM

IN CLASS THIS WEEK WE DID A LAB ON THE SPECTRUM OF COLORS. WE WERE GIVEN CHEMICAL SOLUTIONS OF DIFFERENT COLORS. WE PUT THE SOLUTION IN A MACHINE AND THE MACHINE TOLD US HOW MUCH LIGHT THE SOLUTION ABSORBED.

IT WAS SUPER DOOOPER INTERRESTING.

WE ALSO LEARNED WHAT COLORS REFLECTED OTHER COLORS AND WHAT COLORS ABSORBED OTHER COLORS.

THANK YOU

MCFLURRY

BONDSSSS :)

DID YOU KNOW THAT...

WHEN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE EN OF TWO ELEMENTS IS VERY LARGE, THE ATOMS AND ELECTRONS AN IONIC BOND FORMS.

WHEN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE EN OF TWO ELEMENTS IS VERY SMALL, ATOM SHARE EQUAL COVALENT ELECTRONS AND A NONMETAL METAL BOND FORMS.

THE THREE TYPES OF BONDS INCLDE....

METAL + METAL: METALLIC BONDING

NONMETAL+ NONMETAL: VOCALENT BONDING

METAL+ NONMETAL : IONIC BONDING

THANK YOU

RADIOACTIVE HALF LIFE SIMULATION!

this week in chemisty class, my class and i had a labed called radioactive half life simulation. in this lab we used pennies to represend decaied substances. each trial we would start off with 100 pennies, idealy we would expect the number of pennies to decrease by half after each half life.

for example 100, 50, 25, 12,6,2,1.

but it didnn't. we end with 1 in the first trial, 3 in the second trial, and two in the last.

after we finished the lab we made a chart and graph to represent all of out data.

mine came out really good.

thankyou,

DRYY ICEE

today in class mr.olson set up some labs to do with dry ice. the first one was where you filled up a water bottle with dry ice and added water, then put a ballon over it the ballon would inflate. after the balloon was inflated it was extremly heavy because it was soo dense.

another lab witch dry ice was when mr. olsen filled a fish tank sized container with dry ice then the students blew bubbles into the container. the bubbles floated above the dry ice without popping.

the thrid lab was when mr. olson filled a container with dry ice and added water. we used bubble liquid to make a bubble, the dry ice would the slowly make the bubble bigger.

overall it was the coolest lab we have done in chemisty so far.

thank you,

to the power of ten video.

yesterday we watched a video. it was very interresting. we stared with two people on a picnic table and went all the way out past our own galaxy. then we came all the way into an atom on a man's skin.

today we watched the same video but in simpsons form. we stared with the simpsons on there couch and went in to outer space. then we came down onto barts head.

its was cool

september tenth's lab

today in chemistry class we were given a worksheet and we had to answer the questions with patterns from the periodic table of elements. it was fun, and now i understand how scienctists created and modeled the periodic table. some of the patterns that me and my group came up were with
- size
- number of electrons
- color
- atomic mass number
- the was an element reacts
- metal, nonmetal, metaloid
-characteristics

those were just few of the patters we found on the periodic table of elements.

chemisty quiz

today Mr.Olson gave my class and I a really hard test. we were given questions like "how many seconds are in 3 years". the following day when Mr Olson returned our quizzes i recived an eff. he went over some on the questions and now i understand how to work out the problems. it was the hardest science test i have ever taken in my life.

and now i am going to go to tutoring to bring my grade up.

time is the labrotory :)

this week in mr. olsens chemistry class we preformed the measurement in chemistry lab. we took everyday objects and measured them on the pan balance. i was surprised to how much everything weighed. my predictions were quite off. it was soooooooooooooooooooooo coool. some of the items that we measured as a group were pennies, nickles, marble, test tobes and dixi cups.

thanks,
mcflurrrrrrrrrrrrrrry!

pennnnnny lab

Penny lab,

i found the penny lab to be extremly interresting. we took ourdinary copper pennies and made them silver then gold. we used some type of mixture and heated it up. then we placed the silver penny on a flame and it turned gold. following our lab, we were asked questions about the true matireal of the penny. i believe the panny did not change to gold, but it did change to a new color. all in all it was a wonderful expirience.

thank you,
